GuineaBRAIN FAQ

What is GuineaBRAIN?

GuineaBRAIN enables students to enter pearls, mnemonics, lecture notes, and other information into their Palms for quick and easy retrieval for reviewing at a later time.  You can classify information based on discipline (e.g., cardiology, anatomy, etc.) and category (e.g., mnemonic, pearl, lecture, etc.).  When viewing entries, you can select to view entries from a particular discipline or category.

Also included in GuineaBRAIN is a scratchpad that permits each entry to have an associated drawing with it.  This is great for drawing anatomical sketches, molecules, and more.

How do I install GuineaBRAIN?

Easy.  Download GuineaBRAIN from OUR SOFTWARE page and simply unzip it.  Install the single prc file onto your Palm, and you are ready to go.

Can you walk me through an example of how to use GuineaBRAIN?

Sure!  Start GuineaBRAIN and you'll see a table with three buttons listed at the bottom labeld New Entry, Discipline, and Categories.  Let us setup a new entry that has the mnemonic for the major branches of the aortic arch.  First, this example is for our anatomy course, so click on the button labeled Discipline.

On the Discipline screen we see another table.  This is where we can choose to view all of our entries by their particular disciplines.  Lets make a new discipline labeled "Anatomy."  Tap on the button labeled Edit Disciplines.  This takes us to a screen where can add, delete, and modify disciplines.  Tap the button New Discipline and then write in the input area "Anatomy."  While we are here, let's create one for Histology and Biochemistry as well.  When you are type writing "Anatomy" click New Discipline and enter "Histology."  Repeat the same process for Biochemistry.  When you are finished, tap the Back button.  This will take us back to the discipline screen.  Tap on the pull down box at the top of the screen and notice that the disciplines we just entered are now listed.  It doesn't do anything yet because we have no entries, but we'll add one in a minute.  Tap the Done button on the Discipline page.

Now we're back at the main page where we are viewing all entries.  Next, let us set up a category to file our mnemonic under.  Tap on the Categories button and you'll be taken to a screen identical to the "Discipline" screen above.  Select Edit Categories and create three new categories just like you did for discipline above.  Call these categories "Mnemonic," "Lecture,", and "Pearl."  When you are finished, tap the Back button to return to the categories page, and the Done button to return to the main page.

Let's create our entry!  On the main screen, tap on New Entry.  This takes to the "Edit Entry" screen where we enter the information about the major branches of the aortic arch.  For title, enter "Branches of Aortic Arch."  Click on the pull down box for Discipline and select "Anatomy."  Click on the pull down box for Category and select "Mnemonic."  Then, click in the text area and enter the following:

Know your ABC'S
(A) ortic arch gives rise to:
(B) rachiocephalic trunk
left (C) ommon (C) arotid
left (S) ubclavian

If you don't like writing in that small text box, you can click on Zoom and the text box will fill the whole screen.    Next, click on Scratchpad and do your best to draw a picture of the aortic arch!  (Optional, of course).  Finally, click Done and you'll return to the main screen.

At the main screen, this time, you'll notice that the table has our entry "Branches of the Aortic Arch."  If you click on it, it will take you back to the edit screen.  Try clicking on Discipline and Categories again.  This time, select "Anatomy" from the Discipline drop down box and you'll notice that your entry is still listed.  If you select "Histology," however, your entry disappears.  If there were entries classified as the Histology discipline, they would be displayed at this point.  The same idea works on the Categories page as well.

Hopefully, this gives you a quick idea of how GuineaBRAIN works!

When I'm drawing in a scratchpad, how do I erase what I've drawn.

If you shift (upstroke in the graffitti area), the pen becomes an eraser.  Simply draw over what you've drawn and watch as your sketch disappears.

Can I run Palm Hacks while using GuineaBRAIN?

You can try.  But if GuineaBRAIN begins acting odd, turn your hacks off and try again (this applies to any and all software, not just the GuineaSOFT line of products).
