What is GuineaLOG?
GuineaLOG is a procedure log for medical students, interns and residents. Since we have to record everything we do in the hospital, we might as well make it as easy as possible. With GuineaLOG, you can tap your procedure into your Palm in a matter of seconds. While some Palm users might choose to use the memo pad to enter their data, GuineaLOG allows you to setup the most common procedures you perform, the most common attendings you work with, and the most common locations where you perform these procedures so that this information is available by just taping the screen rather than writing it all out each time.
How do I install GuineaLOG?
Easy. Download GuineaLOG from OUR SOFTWARE page and simply unzip it. Install the single prc file onto your Palm, and you are ready to go.
Can you walk me through an example of how to use GuineaLOG?
Sure! Start GuineaLOG from your Palm's launcher. When you first start you've got a nice, big empty box and three buttons labeled New, View by Proc, and Configure. Before we jump right into entering procedure data, we need to configure GuineaLOG so that entering procedures will be quick and easy. So click the Configure button.
On the configuration screen you see a nice notice telling you that this is where you enter all your data so that it will be easily accessible in the procedure entry screen. Let's start by entering some procedure data. Click the Procedures button.
On the Procedure List screen, tap in the text area and write "Colonoscopy." Then tap New Procedure and write "EGD" (I prefer writing EGD to using graffiti to spell out esophagogastroduodenoscopy). So now we have two common procedures in our procedure list. Let's go enter some common attendings. Tap Back.
Now we're back on the Configuration screen. Click the Attendings button and enter two attendings, "Smith" and "Jones". Repeat the same process you did above for procedures. When you have entered those two attendings, go back to the configuration screen and tap Locations. Enter "MGH" (My General Hospital) for one location and "YGH" (Your General Hospital) for the other. Go back to the configuration screen when you are done.
At this point we should have two procedures, two attendings, and two locations. So now the fun begins... let's enter the procedure data. Tap Done at the configuration menu and New at the main GuineaLOG screen.
On the Edit Procedure screen see all the data that we will store about our procedure. Click in the Patient ID area and enter the patient's initials, for this example we'll use "TJ". Next, enter the medical record number. When you get to the procedure field you will now be able to click on the pull-down box and see the two common procedures you entered at the configuration screen. Ta da! That was quick. You can repeat the same for attending, location, and role as well. Go ahead and enter this information for this patient:
Patient ID: TJ
Med Rec #: 123456
Procedure: Colonoscopy
Date: (Today's date)
Time: 1300
Attending: Smith
Location: MGH
Role: Performed
Now tap Done and you'll see your entry in the table on the main screen. Let's enter one more patient the same way you did above:
Patient ID: JS
Med Rec #: 654321
Procedure: EGD
Date: (Today's date)
Time: 1300
Attending: Jones
Location: YGH
Role: Observed
Now click on the Notes button for our "JS" patient and enter a note on how Dr. Jones never lets you do anything but watch. Use these notes to store any additional information you might need for a procedure. Finally, click the Done button to go back to the main screen.
One last feature worth mentioning is the View by Proc button on the main screen. This simply allows us to look at a table and select which procedures we want to view. Pretty self-explanatory. And of course, if we want to edit or review any of the data on the procedure, we just tap that entry in the table and we'll be taken to edit that entry.
Hopefully, this gives you an idea of how to use GuineaLOG.
Can I run Palm Hacks while using GuineaLOG?
You can try. But if GuineaLOG begins acting odd, turn your hacks off and try again (this applies to any and all software, not just the GuineaSOFT line of products).
